About Unusual Venues Edinburgh

There is no venue more Edinburgh than the Caves, or more Scottish than Scottish, if you consider there was once so much Whisky stored here that it became known as “Whisky Row”. Every room has a story to tell and a special place in Scottish history -from vaults that served as the stables to the French Cavalry who were at one time body guards to the Royal Family, to remains of the houses that pre-date the Bridge itself – with the original terracotta floor tiles still intact! Imagine being able to say “I do” in a room originally used to stable the French Cavalry and then dancing the night away in a spectacular vaulted room that has seen hundreds of years of Edinburgh history.

At the Caves we offer the whole days wedding experience. Licensed for civil partnerships, we can help you to arrange your truly unique and memorable underground wedding venue in the heart of Edinburgh’s Old Town.

From traditional sit down meals to medieval Hog Roasts fit for Kings, The Caves offers you an opportunity to really put your individual stamp on your big day.

Today, after over 100 years of being lost, the hidden vaults were rediscovered and the original stone vaults of the Old Town Edinburgh have been magnificently restored by father and son team, Norrie Rowan senior (Scottish rugby internationalist and Grand Slam squad member) and Norman Rowan junior. With great regard for preserving the authenticity and history of this venue, for many years they have painstakingly excavated these vaults, creating this spectacular and very unique venue. Recently opened is our new smaller venue The Rowantree. The Rowantree was originally called Lucky Middlesmass’s Tavern and is mentioned is poems by Robert Ferguson. It was the watering hole for the all the key figures in the Scottish Enlightenment, Rabbie Burns, David Hume, Adam smith, Deacon Brodie, with visits from James Watt and Benjamin Franklin. Steeped in history and fabulously cozy this is a great venue for more smaller, more personal events.
